Flags and Christmas

The U.S. Flag Code, the official list of rules for civilian flag display, includes a list of holidays when it is especially appropriate to display the United States flag.  We expect, of course, to find Presidents Day, Flag Day and Independence Day on that list.  However, Christmas Day is one of those flag flying holidays listed.

Actually, Christmas Day has been closely tied to the flag going back at least to the U.S. Civil War.  Santa Clause, usually recognizable in a fur trimmed red suit, has also been depicted wearing flag suits similar to what we might expect to see clothing Uncle Sam.  Small paper flags have also been used as decorations for Christmas trees.  In Norway, a Christmas tree is not fully decorated until garlands of tiny Norwegian flags are strung carefully amid the branches.
